Hour of the Star (1985)
Hosted By Leith KinoArgonaut Books and Leith Kino are continuing their collaboration with Saturday screenings over September. Join us in the bookshop for a screening of Suzana Amaral's adaptation of The Hour of the Star, the final novel by Ukrainian-born Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, one of the most influential voices in twentieth-century Brazilian literature. Macabéa (Marcélia Cartaxo), a shy young typist who has migrated from Brazil's northeast to São Paulo, drifts through the bustling city, quietly searching for connection and purpose in a world that barely seems to notice her. Far removed from conventional screen heroines, Macabéa is timid, awkward and almost invisible, and yet she becomes one of the most unforgettable protagonists in Brazilian cinema. Rather than seeking a faithful page-to-screen translation, Amaral described her approach as a "transmutation" of Lispector's novel; a process of reimagining while still capturing the force of Lispector's singular prose. The result is a quietly radical portrait of a woman rarely granted space or attention, and a landmark of feminist Brazilian cinema.
