The film Tired of their mundane jobs, five friends set out on a drug-fuelled weekend in Cardiff, hopping between pubs, clubs and parties. A cult classic of the Cool Cymru era, Human Traffic is an unapologetic and surprisingly affectionate portrait of 90s rave culture, youthful hedonism and a generation looking for freedom and connection on the dancefloor. Written and directed by Justin Kerrigan when he was just 25, the film features a soundtrack packed with Orbital, Underworld and Primal Scream, alongside John Simm, Lorraine Pilkington and a young Danny Dyer in his feature debut. Presented in its recently restored 4K version courtesy of the BFI, with descriptive subtitles. After the film Following the screening, Cinetopia presents an interactive exhibition exploring Scottish nightlife across generations, remembering beloved clubs and venues that have become part of Scotland’s cultural history. Audiences are invited to contribute their own memories and stories, before we round off the night with a DJ session of 90s bangers and Human Traffic-inspired tunes. Tickets are available for the film + DJ session or DJ session only. Guest Programmer: Rowan Sharp The event is curated by Rowan Sharp, a theatre and filmmaker from the Highlands, now based in Glasgow. Rowan says: “Human Traffic is a truly charming film that celebrates messiness and hedonism, and does so in this strangely earnest and sympathetic way. It’s full of deeply relatable characters that remind me of my pals, or those random strangers you end up in weird conversations with in the corner of a gaff. Like many people my age, I wish I was around to experience rave and club culture in the 90s, not only for the music but for the freedom that came with it. As commercial interests and conservative politics continue to threaten spaces that have played such an important part in Scotland’s culture, community and social heritage, I’m curious about what we can learn from other generations who found joy through escapism in times of difficulty.” Film information HUMAN TRAFFIC (1999) Dir.
