Join us for a rare screening of the Brothers Quay’s Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass, a mesmerising fusion of live action and handcrafted stop-motion puppet animation. Based on Bruno Schulz’s surreal 1937 literary classic, the film follows Józef on a ghostly journey to visit his dying father in a remote sanatorium. But this is no ordinary place: time itself is distorted, and the boundary between dream and reality grows eerily thin. The Quay Brothers’ third feature film, following The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes (2006) and Dormitorium (2007), is a deliciously delirious dreamscape of haunting imagery, uncanny puppetry and surrealist wonder. Join us for weekly screenings, celebrating films that are international, experimental, arthouse, trash, cult, a little bit strange, and maybe otherwise hard to see on the big screen. There will be free (vegan) popcorn. Drinks and refreshments are available to purchase at the Depot bar, alongside our monthly posters, each designed by a different Leith-based artist.
