Old Horizons in Audio-Visual Entertainment, Live! From VHS! Free! Lionman, AKA The Sword And The Claw, is a dubbed and re-edited Turkish actioner in which the son of a king is raised by lions, from whom he learns his unique eye-gouging fighting style. He fights for revenge against the despot who deposed his father, culminating in a delirious battle in which Lionman must use his METAL CLAWS against an army. It was the box art of this 1983 VHS that sold it to me, but for once this film delivers on its promotional materials. Ninja 3 is what happens when you want to make a ninja film but you also want to rip off Flashdance but you only have the budget to make one movie. It's not connected narratively to Cannon Films' two previous Ninja films except in name, and features Lucinda Dickey from Breakin' and Breakin' 2 Electric Boogaloo as an aerobics instructor who is possessed by the spirit of a dead ninja, and forced to hunt and kill the cops who gunned down the ninja's previous body. Add in Sho Kusogi and a turn from James Hong as a sort of ninja exorcist and you have an extremely 1984 blend not seen before or since. Screening off a 1989 Guild Vhs which uses the 1984 theatrical cut, after the bbfc had their way with it. It was later released uncut at 15! Kids these days don't know they're born.
